LANDSCAPE
The ‘département’ of the Vaucluse is situated between the two great valleys of the Rhône and the Durance and the first foothills of the Alps. The landscape around Vaison-la-Romaine is dominated by the mass of Mont Ventoux (6,273 feet). There are signs of different and ancient cultures here; of these, the Roman heritage is one of the strongest, some of the most notable monuments and remains include those at Orange, Arles, Avignon, St. Rémyde-Provence and Vaison-la-Romaine.
The dry hillsides are covered with olive trees, lavender, cypress, cedars and pines, which together with a marvellous variety of herbs lend the countryside a magical scent. The Roman-tiled roofs of the villages give off a rosy tinge.
During the heat of the day one can repose in small squares, shaded by plane trees where there is the inevitable café with tables outside.
Many of our houses are to be found in the region east of Orange amidst the beautiful countryside around Mont Ventoux and the jagged hills of the ‘Dentelles de Montmirail’.Other houses are near St. Rémy-de-Provence, a celebrated centre for painters, sculptors and writers; the Pays de Sault, a rather special valley at 700m, a land of hay, lavender and the best nougat; the Luberon, a ‘Parc Naturel Régional’, with a fine mountain range affording splendid walks and views.
To the north we have houses in Drôme with rolling hills clad in fields of
lavender, grain and vines interrupted by oak woods and startling yellow broom. To either side lie mountains, the Alps and the Massif Centrale.

LEISURE AND SPORT
Many of our properties in this region have their own swimming pools as do all the towns and many villages. There are also several sports clubs and restaurants which will allow visitors to use their pools.
Tennis is available in all towns and some villages and most sports are catered for including golf, rowing and hill sports such as mountain biking. international standard. For example: operas, ballets etc. take place in the Papal Palace at Avignon and the Roman theatres at Vaison, Orange, Arles and Nîmes and many other towns and villages. Our houses are well-placed for these but there is considerable demand so it is very important to book seats early, if possible during March.

Die Provence kann bei ihrer über 2000 Jahre alten Geschichte auch viel Kunst und Kultur bieten. Die Kelten siedelten sich um 400 v. Chr. an, um Christi Geburt ließen sich dann die Römer in der Region nieder. Viele Gebäude aus dieser Zeit sind auch heute noch zu besichtigen.

Die wichtigsten Punkte bei einer "Sight-seeing-Tour" könnten folgende sein: das Theater und der Triumphbogen in Orange, das Forum und das Theater von Vaison la Romaine, die Patriziervilla in Vaison. Westlich von Avignon ist das beeindruckende Pont du Gard, ein gut erhaltenes, römisches Aquädukt. Geschichtlich gesehen wurde die Region sehr im 14. Jhd. geprägt, als die Päpste den Amtssitz nach Avignon verlegten. Aus dieser Zeit stammt der honigfarbene Papstpalast in Avignon, den man heute noch besuchen kann.
Neben Orange, Avignon und Vaison la Romaine sollte man auch St. Rémy de Provence besuchen. Dort befindet sich das bekannte Zentrum für Maler, Bildhauer und Schriftsteller. Das angenehm warme und sonnige Klima der Provence zieht viele Künstler an.
