Gentle, rolling hills, orchards and rich farmland criss-crossed by rivers and  streams and dotted with small hilltop villages and towns, built in the white stone of Quercy.
Most of our houses in the region are in the ‘départment’ of the Lot-et-Garonne and a few are in the Dordogne. The valley of the river Lot around Villeneuve-sur-Lot is known as the orchard of France. Here are produced vast quantities of peaches, apples, pears, cherries, and, above all, the Agen plum. Further west the Lot-et-Garonne is given over more and more to wine production. To the north the region is bordered by the river Dordogne.
LANDSCAPE
Gentle rolling hills, rich farmland and orchards are spread between the valley of the Dordogne and the Garonne. The landscape is complemented by the traditional stone farms, grander ‘Manoirs’ and minor châteaux.
Between the rivers Lot and Tarn is a little known landscape – a gentle, peaceful agricultural area with expansive views across the countryside to the small hilltop villages and towers, built in the white stone of the Quercy. Many of these towns, such as Tournon d’Agenais, have a central square and narrow streets intersecting at right angles, typical of a ‘Bastide’ (fortified village).
FOOD AND WINE
The cooking is usually simple, with some superb local specialities, foie gras, confit de canard, country pâtés, game, fresh-water fish, fruit and vegetables. The markets are also exceptional value for money with excellent local produce for sale.
Wines of the region are from Bordeaux, home of clarets, dry whites (Graves) and sweet whites (Sauternes and Barsac); also Bergerac, white and red, Sigoules and Duras which are potent wines made with the Sauvignon grape.
HISTORY AND ARCHITECTURE
This area played a major part in world events during the Hundred Years’ War and some of the best examples of fortified villages, known as ‘Bastides’ can be found here: Monpazier, Villeréal, Castillonnès and Eymet. Of the larger towns, Moissac is of great architectural interest, having a Romanesque abbey and cloisters. Agen has a fascinating old quarter and the chateau at Bonaguil is one of the finest examples of 15th century architecture.
LEISURE AND SPORT
Walking, fishing and lake swimming are all available in the region and tennis courts are provided for general use in most of the local towns. However, this is first and foremost, the ideal area for those who like to relax and enjoy the peace of the countryside. There are also a number of lakes with beaches and shaded picnic spots.
FESTIVALS
Late July, early August: Bonaguil Music Festival. All the villages have fêtes during the summer months and these are advertised locally.
CLIMATE
The climate is generally very agreable. The warm weather begins as early as May, lasting well into October, and there is usually a refreshing breeze in high summer.

Aquitanien präsentiert sich als sanftes, welliges Hügelland mit Obstgärten und Äckern, von Flüssen und Bächen durchzogen. Die größte Sanddüne Europas ist die Düne von Pilat, mit über 100 Meter Höhe und fast 3 km Länge. Im Landesinneren sind die Tiefebenen des Aquitanischen Beckens mit weiten Kiefernwäldern und den berühmten Weinbergen von Bordeaux und Medoc.
Die moderne Region Aquitanien bietet viele Sehenswürdigkeiten, wie zum Beispiel: Agen, Arcachon, Bayonne, Beynac-et-Cazenac, Biarritz, Bordeaux, La Roque-Gageac, Saint-Jean-de-Luz, Saint-Martin-d'Arberoue, Vieux-Boucau-les-Bains usw.

Die Weine stammen aus Bordeaux, die Heimat des Clarets, trockener Weißweine (Graves) und süßer Weißweine (Sauternes und Barsac); sowie aus Bergerac, Weiß- und Rotwein, Sigoules und Duras, wo schwere Weine aus Sauvignontrauben hergestellt werden.
